Microwave ovens are the appliance people are most tempted to open themselves, and the one where that’s the worst idea. A microwave’s high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the unit is unplugged, which is why this repair belongs with someone who has the tools to discharge it safely.
The good news is that most microwave faults are well-defined and repairable. A microwave that lights up, turns and hums but leaves food cold has almost certainly lost its magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. Sparking inside usually points to a damaged waveguide cover or worn cavity paint. A unit that won’t start at all is often a door interlock switch - a small, inexpensive part.
We repair at your home wherever possible. If a unit needs workshop equipment, we’ll explain why, quote for it, and only take it with your agreement.

Covers travel and inspection. A firm quote follows before any work - decline it and you pay only the visit charge.
Door switch, turntable motor and keypad repairs sit at the lower end. Magnetron and control board replacement are the larger jobs.
Because microwave ovens sit at a lower price point than other appliances, there’s a genuine crossover point where repair stops making sense. We’ll tell you when you’ve reached it rather than quoting a repair that costs most of a new oven.
Common questions
Microwave repair FAQs
Almost always the magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. These are testable and replaceable - it doesn’t mean the oven is finished.
No. Stop using it and unplug it. Sparking usually means a damaged waveguide cover or worn cavity paint, and continuing to run it can damage the magnetron and become a fire risk.
Please don’t. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the oven is unplugged and has been sitting for a while. This is the one common household appliance where DIY inspection carries a genuine electrocution risk.
It depends on the fault and the oven’s value. A door switch or turntable motor is almost always worth fixing. A magnetron in a very old, low-cost oven often isn’t. We’ll give you the honest comparison after diagnosis.
Yes - including combination models, which have additional heating elements and thermostats that solo ovens don’t.
Wherever possible, yes. If a unit needs workshop equipment we’ll explain why and quote for it first.
Most are completed within an hour at your home once the correct part is available.
